
Gopal Alagarswamy
Gopal Alagarswamy received his Ph.D. from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium in 1972. On completion of studies, started his career at the International Crop Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in India working to improve crop production in East and West Africa. He started working at the Michigan State University (MSU) in 1998, developing crop simulation model to assess potential impact of current and future climate on maize production in American Midwest. He was a member of First US National Assessment team in understanding impacts of climate change on the natural environment and agriculture. This program was organized by the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) mandated by US Congress. On completion of the program, he was involved in a Climate Land Interaction Project at MSU examining the Dynamic Interactions of climate among People, Livestock and Savanna Ecosystem of East Africa. This program was funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF). He retired from Michigan State University in 2016 and moved to San Diego to join daughter’s family and enjoy the warm weather. In summing up, his entire career was involved in assessing potential impacts of current and future climate on maize production in USA and East Africa.
